There are bears in the castle moat at Cesky Krumlov in Czechia. Not deeply driven poles with vicious sharp points spiked to kill invading enemies. Not murky moat-water deep and toxic enough to drown. Not man-snapping alligators. Bears.
Cabbage-eating, carrot-eating, vegetarian bears. Several of them. I can’t imagine even one of them wanting to take too large a bite out of smelly, meat-eating, invading hordes. So why were they there, one wonders? Symbolically, perhaps.
They’ve evidently been a fixture in the moat since the 16th century when Cesky Krumlov castle was owned by the Rosenbergs, who came to Southern Bohemia via Italy, and, who, may even have been related to the Italian Orsini family, whose symbol was the bear. It is quite possible back then that the bears were placed into the moat as a familial symbolic nod to their heavy-duty Italian relatives. Tho’ even that connection is now in dispute.
But since the Rosenbergs have long gone, and the invading hoards are currently quiet behind their lines, why is the topic of discussion now not along the lines of what’s best to do with the bears? Their fate seems to be more a terrible tourist attraction today. I feel sorry for them.
Apart from the bear moat, this was once a marvelous castle, second only to Prague in size. It had its own salt mill, lapidary complex, performing theatre, summer and winter riding schools, fountained gardens, and multi-function castle guards who not only played music at m’lady’s galas and balls but escorted the seignorial cash box during travels ‘abroad’. Amazing place.
And it has the most glorious cloak bridge I have ever seen, with levels for walking and one for riding horses across the gorge that connects the castle parts. You can imagine the intrigue, the cloak and dagger discussions, that would have cluttered this beautiful bridge in days of lord and ladies.
A delightful town, Cesky Krumlov. High on the UNESCO inscribed list for cultural sites, mainly because the entire town is a 750 year old architectural treasure trove.
And there, Bec captured herself a Knight in Shining Armour for one brief moment in time; but, found herself forced to cast him aside, after only the briefest courtship, for being far too heavy metal.
